Gail Reid is a prolific Dubai-‐based artist, who works tirelessly in her pursuit of accurate representative drawing, painting and printmaking. Reid, originally from Oxford in the UK, is a figurative artist whose daily practice is observational drawing. She undertakes private commissions from her busy art studio in Dubai, and has featured in group exhibitions both in the UAE and UK. Gail has a mathematics degree and printmaking postgraduate diploma from UK universities – a background that is reflected in her solid draftsmanship and realism.
Gallery 76 at Dubai International Art Centre is delighted to showcase ‘Raw Observations’, a retrospective of expressive drawings and linocuts by British artist Gail Reid. The exhibition, with live drawing sessions, opens with a reception at 6.30pm on Saturday 29 April and runs through Saturday 6 May. In her debut solo exhibition at Gallery 76, Reid will capture the hearts of Dubai residents and visitors alike through her beautifully personal and emotive portraits of Dubai – all associated with the city, its people, flora and fauna and, more recently, with her ongoing ‘toys’ series.
Reid’s work broadly falls into three categories: sketches, linocut and portraiture, capturing the essence of everyday objects in a lively and expressive way. Reid eschews colour, focusing instead on raw form, light and shade. During the exhibition there will also be the unique opportunity to view the artist at work through live drawing sessions, with Reid engaging in a demonstration sketch on the exhibition’s opening night.
